The purpose of this study was to examine the course and outcome of anxiety symptoms in childhood. The participants were 103 elementary school children in whom anxiety symptoms were assessed at Time 1 (3rd, 4th grade) and Time 2 (5th, 6th grade). Results indicated that although highly anxious children at Time 1 improved with time, they still exhibited higher scores than children categorized in the low-moderate anxiety group at the initial evaluation. In addition, children exhibiting clinical-level anxiety at Time 2 were noted as having developed increasingly serious symptoms with the passage of time, suggesting the necessity and importance of intervention for school-age children exhibiting anxiety symptoms.
