Five large Japanese publishers (Sanshusha, Ikubundo, Dogakusha, Hakusuisha and Asahi) send out samples of their newly published or revised textbooks for German language classes at Japanese universities in winter each year, a total of about 20 to 30 books. Most of these books are for use in the language courses for general education, which are taught in the first year of university studies, and areeither centered on teaching the basics of German grammar, or have a communicative approach in addition to introducing grammar. All books are very similar in appearance (B5 size, 60 to 100 pages)and content. This article analyses 26 textbooks, which the author received and which have been newly published or fully revised in 2006 and 2007. This is not a full overview of the textbook scene in these years, as it is unknown if the major publishers have sent all their new books and which books other companies have published. The textbooks can be arranged in two groups: grammar-oriented books, or communication- oriented books with a large part devoted to exercises. 14 books are grammar-oriented, and they typically introduce basic German grammar as verb conjugation, noun declension, past tense, adjective declension, sentence structure and maybe even the subjunctive. Only a small number of their pages are dedicated to exercises. Communication-oriented books, of which 12 have been analysed, normally start each chapter with a short conversation, which doubles as an introduction to new vocabulary as well as to new grammar. In these books, generally only basic grammar is taught. Many exercises give students the opportunity to practice the new grammar and words. It is unclear, which level of German knowledge should be achieved with these books. No detailed information (e.g. number of words to be learned, ability to write or not) is available. The "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages" is not used in any of the books. Also, the authors make no recommendations for how many classroom hours the books should be used. And, with one exception, all books lack a strategy to stretch students beyond than the basic courses of the first year.
