Sensory neurons produce action potentials depending on the stimulus intensity. Based on this fact, Adrian proposed that the sensory information is encoded by the time−varying firing rate of neurons. Since then, the firing rate has been measured in order to describe the properties of individual neurons. However, recent studies revealed that information might be represented not only by the firing rate, but also by temporally correlated spike discharges among neurons. In this article, the history of studies on neural assembly hypotheses and related problems are reviewed. Then, recent developments in experimental approaches to neural representation formats are summarized.
