This paper, the sixth in the career design era series, is subtitled “on the ideal society for an individual pursuing his own career design”. It is divided into two parts. The first part discusses how American people, especially those living on the West Coast, envision their future. In this part, I introduce the theory of new urbanism and sociological thought proposed mainly by Robert Bellah, Elliott Professor of Sociology Emeritus at UC Berkeley. In the second part, I discuss what kind of life Japanese people should lead and what kind of society Japan should become. I describe life in the Edo era, focusing on its sustainability, and I explain the current government consensus on ideal Japanese society and ideal Japanese people, which are based on reports made by Japanese intellectual leaders for the Japanese government. I then introduce the opinions of three scholars on the future of societies, which I strongly recommend to young Japanese. Finally I propose the term “stewardship” as one of four principles (the others are friendship, citizenship and entrepreneurship) to guide Japanese people’s efforts to pursue their own career design.
