This paper aims to explore possibilities of utilizing Komainu, guardian lion-dogs at Shinto shrines, as a research topic in the Integrated Study Program. Komainu were not donated to shrines simply for religious reasons. During the latter half of the Edo Era, merchants in Osaka donated Naniwa Komainu to shrines all over Japan, seemingly with the purpose of expanding their markets and/or promoting their business activities. After the Meiji Restoration, village people also donated Komainu to shrines, which provides valuable information when investigating the relationship between the nation and the villages in wartime Japan. Komainu, found nationwide, have attractive local features and exist in close connection with the local communities. Given these reasons, Komainu are certainly ac hallenging research topic in the Integrated Study Program for junior and senior high school students.
