In the section ■Breaking through Ignorance and Fulfilling Aspirations■ (shōmyō haman jaku) in the Chapter on Practice of the Kyōgyōshinshō, Shinran teaches that the ignorance of sentient beings is broken through the recitation of Amida's Name, and that wishes or aspirations are fulfilled. According to an established interpretation for this section, sentient beings' recitation of the Name arises from Shinjin (mind of entrusting) of Amida's Other Power. However, Oka Ryōji, late Professor Emeritus of Ryukoku University, presented a new interpretation that recitation of the Name breaks ignorance and fulfills aspirations regardless of the presence or lack of Shinjin. In this paper, I raise a question on the validity of Oka's interpretation, including problems found in his research methodology.
