The Hossō School, of which Gedatsubō Jōkei (1155-1213) was a leading Thinker, promulgates the teaching of the ‘distinction between the five predispositions,' which claims that there are sentient beings who can attain Buddhahood as well as those who cannot. The aim of this teaching is not to emphasize the existence of beings who are unable to attain Buddhahood, however. Rather, it should be understood as an attempt to clearly explain just what the path to Buddhahood entails. Nevertheless, for those who accept it, this teaching does give rise to uncertainty over whether one possesses the predisposition for Buddhahood (in the form of innate undefiled seeds) or not. The present paper relies on Jōkei's newly-discovered work Hossōshū Taii Myōmoku (Glossary of the Major Concepts of the Hossō School) to demonstrate how he brilliantly resolves this conundrum using the Buddhist concept of ‘faith.’
