A Japanese translation of Thomas Nagel, "The Sleep of Reason", a book review of Sokal and Bricmont, Fashionable Nonsense: Postmodern Intellectuals" Abuse of Science. Having explained the content of the book, Nagel argues against postmodernism and social constructivism about science that contemporary philosophy and history of science do not support in any way relativism about scientific knowledge, and that scientific researches can give us a body of knowledge of reality which is "beyond a reasonable doubt". Nagel adds that the theory of relativity and quantum theory do not support relativists' subjective conception of reality. Finally Nagel criticises Sokal's "Old Leftist" stance, and concludes that postmodernism is a natural successor of the traditional "unmasking" strategies of leftist intellectuals.
