It seems that the Civil War and the Interregnum did hardry contribute to little fundamental transformation of the naturalization system in England, although the political and social upheaval of the 1640s and 1650s caused a sharp decrease in number of acts for naturalization and patents for denization. In 1660, the accession of King Charles and the commencement of the Restoration led to resuming grants of naturalization and denization. The aim of this paper is to illuminate the details of those who gained these statuses, during two decades of the Restoration by examining the source, the Letters of Denization and Acts of Naturalization for Alines in England, 1603-1700. Naturalization had traditionally applied to individuals, most often foreign-born children of Englishmen and women rather than aliens. The Restoration reinforces this tendency. In conclusion, however, the finding of the analysis will indicate that from the 1660s the ranks of naturalized aliens gradually commenced to broaden, with the growing inclusion of private naturalization acts for individual foreign born aliens.
