Due to deteriorating conditions in terms of the resources allocated to statistical activities, statistical production in most countries is increasingly dependent on a more intensive use of already collected statistical information. The integration of multi-sourced data is now emerging as a main concern among statisticians throughout the world. This paper discusses individual statistical record as an entity that consists of data carrier and data body. A comparative study of digital sound, pictorial and statistical records shows that these records share a common structure as date in that a set of variables which compose the data body are inseparably linked and supported by other variables which are categorized as data carrier. Returned questionnaires carry not only respondents’ responses to the designated questions but also additional information that used not to be regarded as statistical information. One of the main concerns of this study is to elucidate the statistical potential of such additional information, most of which has not been thought to be statistical. With regard to data integration, it can work as key players in linking together multi-sourced records to generate new records and thus expand the dimensions of the variables concerned. Cross-sectional and longitudinal expansion of records will not only explore new territory regarding the usability of existing data but can also contribute to improving the quality of analyses.The paper also refers to spatial data carriers, which enable the macro-based integration of data.
