This is a report on a survey held at Kanazawa University in January, 2010. About85% of the first year students and some second and third year students have takenpart in the survey. The survey was about self-assessed levels of students’ Englishlanguage skills, their assessments on the level of the English courses they weretaking, and the levels of English Language ability they wish to attain in the future. The participants used CEFR Can-Do description table (Kanazawa Universityversion), in order to assess levels of individual language skills. The result showsthat the highest percentages of students assess their language abilities as B1 inCEFR scale in most skill areas except that of participating in conversation. Theresult also shows that different students assess the same course quite differently. Italso shows that about half of the students wish to attain B2 level, and about onefifth to one third of students wish to attain C1 (or higher) level in English, depending on the skill area.
