The purpose of this paper is to clarify and reveal the significance of Roland Petit’ s Le jeune homme et la mort (1946) through the analysis of its original scenario, choreographies and interpretations and some critical essays. Above all, representations of five male dancers are analized. This work is the most famous work by Les Ballets des Champs-Élysées, and it was considered the most outstanding ‘event’ at that time. Therefore, it was called ‘new ballet’ in the post-war French dance. Althogh Jean Cocteau’s original story is not so particular, in this work, dancers were required to provide not only their own interpretation and technique, but also their own sense and even their ability of expression. Especially, the representation of ‘suffering’ or ‘emotion’ of ‘Le jeune homme’ heavily depends on the capability of male dancer. And, a chair, a table and also the narrow floor give unique effect. In conclusion, the essence of this work lies in: ‘real’ young man appears in ballet theater.
