This paper sheds light on the process of diplomatic negotiations between Charles V, the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, and Henry VIII through his ambassador. On 11 February 1543, the Treaty of closer friendship and alliance was concluded between Charles V and Henry VIII. Charles V sent letters to Chapuys, his resident ambassador in England, and emphasized his opinion on the articles of the treaty. He requested that there be no clause in the treaty referring to the Pope and that the treaty should defend the religious freedom of his subjects in England. The alliance between Charles V, the defender of Catholicism, and Henry VIII, who denied the papal authority was originally incompatible. Their hostility toward France, however, brought them together. Charles V, surrounded by anti-Habsburg countries led by France, needed support from elsewhere. For England, then at war with Scotland, it was necessary to form a common front against France, which had begun to aid Scotland. For both monarchs it was imperative to conclude their diplomatic alliance even if that entailed overriding their religious differences.
