In this research the students addressed questions and social dilemmas using Okinawa as a case study. Our hope was that during the study of and contact with the people facing these social dilemmas, the students would start to think of these problems as their own, and their willingness to learn about them would mature. Our intention was to put this idea into practice. In the end, the result was that the students' level of concern for Okinawan problems did increase, and they did, in fact, develop their ability to think about social phenomena. Although the students could not visit the subject location and people in person, they were able to communicate with them to a significant degree by using the Internet (via Skype).
