The surfing boom and the solitary island boom came in succession, and a lot of young people visited Niijima Island in the 1970’s. The number of visitors increased rapidly and reached up to 120,000 people in 1981. Recently, the number has been halved with only 60,000 visiting in 2009, but 42% of visiting tourists aim at surfing. The surf spots are big tourist attractions for Niijima Island. The Japanese Surfing Championship has been held many times on Niijima Island. It is one of eminent surf spots in Japan. However, Surfing did not become active spontaneously there. Shonan Beach and Boso Beach have been the birthplace of the surfing for Japan. Young boys and girls had played in the surf, and they joined with the American soldier who had surfboards in 1960’s. Surfing became active on Niijima Island as a result the cooperation with Tokai Kisen Co.,Ltd. (a steamship line), National Surfing Association and Niijima Tourist Association. Niijima Island is a successful case of the local revitalization through sports.
