This paper investigates the factors behind the fascination with Japanese manga in Germany. Part 1 examines the dramatic growth of the manga market in Germany since the 1990s. Part 2 deals with the origin and development of the manga boom in Germany and discusses how youth became fascinated by Japanese manga and anime. It also elucidates the strategies pursued by leading publishers in Germany. Part 3 examines the style and issues dealt with by Japanese manga, especially in connection with youth culture. Japanese manga, however, have their own social, historical and cultural backgrounds, and therefore must often seem exotic to the German reader. Here, the paper explains what German manga-ka, or comic artists, have learned from the foreign culture and the role of the manga elements drawn in from Japanese culture in the German manga scene.
