Language policies have been a central issue in the EU in order to protect linguistic and cultural diversity and promote social integration, and because multilingual citizens are better placed to take advantage of the educational, professional and economic opportunities created by an integrated Europe. This paper aims to investigate how goals and guidelines of language policies commonly shared among the EU state members have been realized in the local context of Slovakia, the smallest country in Central Europe with complex historical and racial backgrounds, which gained independence from Czechoslovakia in 1993 and joined the EU in 2004. The primary focus is on the following issues: the general background of Slovakia, education system and reforms, foreign language education policy, including teacher training and other related issues. In addition, some attention is paid to a critical language conflict related to national minorities in Slovakia, especially the Hungarians. In conclusion, the findings are discussed with some thoughts and suggestions about Japanese language education policies
