The purposes of the present study were to examine the congruity effects of color information on incidental memory and to compare the size of the effects on pleasant words with the size of those on unpleasant words. In Experiment I, participants were asked to rate the degree of congruity between a target and its paired color name, followed by an incidental free recall test. All participants were asked to recall as many words as possible. A congruity effect of color name was observed. The words associated with congruous color names were recalled more often than those with incongruous color names. However, a difference in congruity effect between pleasant and unpleasant words was not observed. In Experiment II, participants were asked to do the same as in Experiment I, except that they were asked to also rate the degree of pleasantness of each word. A congruity effect was also found, but there was no difference in the size of the effect between pleasant and unpleasant words. In Experiment III, the participants were asked to produce a color name associated with each word, followed by an unexpected free recall test. The results showed that the words associated with congruous color-names were recalled more often than those associated with incongruous colornames. However, the size of the congruity effect was not different between pleasant and unpleasant words. These results were interpreted as showing that color information could be an effective cue for retrieving words congruous to it.
