In the past, women were forced to learn handiwork to acquire two traits of womanhood: reticence and obedience. In more modern times, sewing and knitting took the place of spinning and weaving as the main current of women's handiwork, and scenes of sewing and knitting thus appear in much English literature. This essay examines what these scenes of handiwork mean in the four novels: Vanity Fair, Adam Bede, Middlemarch and The Mill on the Floss. Handiwork was regarded as the means to make women stay indoors and concentrate their attention on working silently, and this brought the image of chastity to handiwork. In Vanity Fair, the widow's sewing symbolizes her chastity: she puts her work-box and her Bible side by side under the portrait of her son and devotes herself to making his shirt. Handiwork, especially knitting, also relates to the virtue of diligence in Puritanism. As an example, Adam Bede depicts housewives who work hard to produce clothes for practical use. On the other hand, knitting also becomes a habit for women who are not competent at managing their home, as this handiwork can still make them appear diligent. In Middlemarch and The Mill on the Floss, fine works such as embroidery and tatting are depicted as a bourgeoisie status symbol. Scenes depicting handiworks such as these are not only a sign of a woman's moral strength; they also represent the love and fellowship between a woman and her family and friends. This suggests that religious overtones are becoming removed from morality as the number of bourgeoisie increases.手仕事は中世から寡黙さを生み従順さを養うものとして女性に課されてきた。糸紡ぎや機織りに代表されていた手仕事は、近代には縫物や編物が主流となり、その情景は小説に多く描かれている。本論文では、Vanity Fair, Adam Bede, Middlemarch, The Mill on the Flossの4作品を通して、近代イギリスの女性の手仕事が何を意味しているかを探った。 手仕事の効果として期待された「屋内に籠って口を閉じ余計な想念を追い払うこと」とは〈貞節〉であることに直結する。これはキリスト教モラルの筆頭に掲げられた婦徳である。Vanity Fairには、未亡人が裁縫箱を聖書の隣に置き、息子に愛をこめて衣服を作る姿を通して、縫物が〈貞節〉の象徴であることが描かれている。 また手仕事は、ピューリタン的な〈勤勉〉・〈節倹〉モラルにも合致するものであった。Adam Bedeには常に手を動かし実用品を編む女性の姿が描かれる。しかし一方で編物はその外観のみが勤勉モラルの実践をアピールするものとなり、無能な女性が習慣的に行なう仕草ともなっている。 Middlemarch, The Mill on the Flossには、中産階級のステイタスシンボルとしての手芸が描かれる。これらの描写においては、手芸は女性にモラルのみでなく恋やおしゃべりの楽しみも与えている。中産階級の台頭と共に、手仕事の厳格なキリスト教的モラルが宗教色を薄め、中産階級の社会モラルへと移行する様子が見て取れるのである。
