This article will explain the influence of the reception of the French modern music to the creation of the Japanese modern music from Meiji Era to the beginning of Showa Era. The exchange between France and Japan which began at the national level turned to the personal and internal one in the cultural and musical area. The composers who went to France(called here French School) looked for the different modernism from that of German style and tried two subjects : one is a thoroughgoing exercise of composition and harmonics which was possible only at the French conservatoires; another is a try to have a fusion of two musical cultures facing their differences. As a conclusion, we got the idea that the French School thus prepared the way to realize the highest level of nationalism in music and laid the foundation of the Japanese modern music after the World War 2, which led to the birth of the composers recognized in the world like Toru Takemitsu.
