The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of melodic words on speech-languageperception of individuals with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). ASD individuals presenting withsignificant limitations in conventional forms of verbal and non-verbal communication are found to respondpositively to music therapy intervention. Previously a large number of case studies of music therapy onASD individuals were reported. Melodic Intonation Therapy (MIT) is a well-known method exploring theverbal encoding of aphasics but is also regarded effective on ASD, because ASD individuals with speechdisabilities can often sing, have good memory of lyrics and communicate with music. This study used electroencephalogram (EEG) power spectrum analyses to characterize duringhearing non melodic words and melodic words. Two ASD individuals, two mentally disabled persons andtwo typically developed persons were participated in this experiment. Alpha and beta power increased during hearing melodic words in all participants. Particularly beta power of the ASD participants more increased during hearing melodic words than hearing non melodic words. This result made it clear that speaking words with melody were effective means of improving verbal communication faculties of ASD individuals.
