This essay is an attempt to reveal how a town was shaped by the mobility of its inhabitants who kept moving within the town and across the town boundary in the context of the town’s formative period, 1850-1910. To trace individuals and families is the main method, which is applied to the database made from census original schedules and city directories. It finds that even seemingly-stable inhabitants of Polish background moved within the town, that they started to become home owner soon after marriage, and that the ethnic differences in the mobility are closely related to the arrangement of cohabitants, kinship relationships, attitudes of elderly caring, home ownership, and work preference. It also points that limitations in using census materials would be overcome by combining them with other materials and thussuch new connections would make the tracing method more useful for new issues.
