In 1905 Soseki Natsume begins his novel, I AM A CAT(1905-06), by making Meitei, one of its characters, say that it is better to paint things by looking at the stains made by rain on the wall of a church. But the art theory quoted by Meitei is opposed to Leonard's opinion, because Leonardo wrote that students should not paint landscapes by incidental images in the stains. Soseki intentionally changed the meaning of Leonard's opinion in the manner of Laurence Sterne, an English novelist in the 18th century, and gave the grotesque name, Kushami, to the main character of his novel. Kushami means firstly a sneeze, secondly "Kusohame (Eat Excrement)!", that is, "Go to devil!" Soseki took the name of Kushami from a main character of Carlyle's novel, Sartor Risartus. In this paper, I would like to interpret Socratic metaphors hidden in Soseki's novel.
