[Abstract] This paper first looks at the psychological influence of a person's needs and desires on their motivation, and the potential mismatch of teacher and student expectations created by methodological differences between Japanese high school and university English classes, due to a paradigm shift in the field of language acquisition. This gap in expectations, which may lead to frustration, is especially critical at the young adult stage of a Japanese university student's cognitive and psychological development. Next this paper examines ten years of Japanese freshmen needs analyses with the intent of informing teachers how to mitigate student reticence toward English.
