[Synopsis] Haru-ukon (Curcuma aromatica) has been cultivated for healthy foods and traditional folk medicines for long years. Only rhizome of C. aromatica is using for these purposes, and the many aerial parts are disposed. As even high costly disposing process may also cause some environmentalpollution, we focused on the using the leaves of C. aromatica as bio-resource of useful chemicals. In the first screening guided tyrosinase inhibitory activity, the alcoholic extract of the leaves of C. aromatica showed high anti-oxidizing and tyrosinase inhibitory activity. The extract was consisted from many amounts of terpenoids by GC-MS analysis. Two compounds have been isolated and identified as neocurdione and curcumenone by fractionation guided tyrosinase inhibitory and SOD activity. Both natural products showed same efficacy of biological activity as arbutin known as cosmetics skinwhitening agent on the SOD and tyrosinase inhibitory assay. Though, the field of cosmetic or healthy food need new natural product, take advantage of waste bio-material is reasonable and lead to promoting of sustainable agriculture.
