[Synopsis] With rapid urbanization, farming and agriculture in the peri-urban area receives impacts, while providing various environmental functions to the residents of urban area. Ogura-Ike reclamation area was predominantly rice-farming area, however, with urbanization and improvements in drainage conditions, the land use pattern has changed. Some of the farmland is converted to residential and commercial areas, and farming shifted to more upland crops, particularly vegetables for neighboring urban residents. With changes in land use patterns, the quality and quantity of drainage water has changed, including rapid runoff of rainfall from urbanized areas, mixing of city wastewater into drainage canals, and more intensive use of fertilizers for vegetable production. All these changes affected the material circulation pattern in the area, leading to the degradation of water quality and environmental/ecosystem functions in the area. The objectives of this study are to identify the changes in land use patterns from the Satellite Imagery, and to apply the material circulation model (DCNC) to analyze the impacts of land use changes on various functions manifested by agricultural land and farming practices.
