This article reports on an email-based project carried out in the spring semester of the 2010 academic year between the US and Japan. The participants are eighty-eight freshmen in three English as a Foreign Language writing classes at Yokohama National University and forty-six third-year Japanese learners in two Japanese as a Foreign Language classes at Portland State University in Oregon, the United States. In this project, the Japanese students were asked to exchange e-mails with team members in the US and furthermore to revise Japanese-language essays written by the US members. After the project, a questionnaire was conducted to assess the Japanese students’ views on the usefulness of the project. The questionnaire also asked the students to write feedback in English on the project. Responses to the questionnaire indicated a broad range of views on the project, both positive and negative, while the written feedback provided information on the students’ (i) integrative motivation, (ii) self-evaluation of English proficiency, and (iii) recognition of the difficulties involved in learning Japanese as a foreign language. The survey results and feedback are expected to enable this e-mail-based project to continue into the future via enhanced opportunities for students to understand English writing as a tool for communication in real contexts.
