[Synopsis] In recent years, the expansion of abandoned bamboo forests has become a serious problem in Satoyama (community forest area). To prevent unregulated expansion of bamboo forests and effectively utilize bamboos after harvesting, bamboo can be processed into compost, thus it can be a useful resource as organic fertilizer. Conventional cultivation of ginseng uses no chemical fertilizer but requires large amount of organic fertilizer application. Combining the bamboo compost with ginseng cultivation will have a large potential for effective resource utilization. In this study, benefits of using bamboo compost in ginseng cultivation were examined by pot and forest floor cultivation experiments. The results indicated that the use of bamboo compost improves inorganic nutrient contents compared with the use of chipped bamboo as raw fertilizer, and effective fertilization becomes possible. In addition soil chemical properties improved with the application of bamboo compost, and the SPAD (Chrolophyl value indicator) values are maintained at high levels, resulted in higher growth and yield. Both pot and forest floor cultivations showed the application of bamboo compost can prevent disease infection, which could be contributed by the effects of silica acid contained in bamboo. As such the application of bamboo compost for ginseng cultivation, which is susceptible to disease infection, can effectively improve and stabilize yield of ginseng.
