Think-aloud methods have been widely adopted for writing research and considered one of the most promising methods to explore writing processes. However, think-aloud methods are seldom used to explore L2 writing processes of Japanese EFL writers. The purpose of this paper is to identify potential problems in analyzing think-aloud protocol data from Japanese EFL writers, based on the literature and a L2 writing experiment conducted under a think-aloud condition. The results revealed some potential problems in establishing segmentation criteria and the coding scheme for data analysis. Dual segmentation criteria were proposed for analyzing think-aloud protocol data from Japanese EFL writers.
