Since 1970's, the study on the ground of the legitimacy of abortion has been performed in bioethics and feminism. In both domains, the right to abortion has been discussed mainly. However, by the arguments based on the right to liberty, the grounds of the legitimacy of abortion are not explained enough. For the arguments are far apart from reality. Considering such situation, Ronald Dworkin and Drucilla Cornell tried their own approaches based on value. Dworkin takes up the cases of women and fetuses and discusses the intrinsic value of human life. On the other hand, Cornell discusses the value of what is feminine, but refers little to the life of fetuses. In this paper, I will examine the status of fetuses in abortion arguments through the arguments of Dworkin and Cornell.
