The purpose of this report is to describe the course design and the role of the Japanese language class which has started this year in the Graduate School of Engineering at Fukui University. Questionnaires were given to the oversea students enrolled in the c1ass and a1so to their mentors. According to the results of the survey the class was aimed to focus on improving their reading capability. This is because students are required to read academic papers written in Japanese and a1so to discuss their researches including experimental design and results in Japanese. By learning to read academic papers on science and technology correct1y， students can expand vocabularies and their ability to read Kanji. By answering and discussing problems related to the contents of various papers，students are also given chances to listen to and speak Japanese.
