• This paper points out the peculiarity of “KOKE-NO-KOROMO” that ends with the decision that the child, who was born as a result of an adulterous affair of the Crown Princess, succeeds the throne. The hero who committed the adultery was HYOUBUKYOU-NO-MIYA. He was a tragic hero who lived a life of agony and became an evil spirit after his death. He was also considered inferior to the main hero KOKEGOROMO-NO-TAISHO, who had become a priest. The paper shows the significance of HYOUBUKYOU-NO-MIYA's son succeeding the throne. Moreover, this paper examines a role of the descendant of the hero and heroine in the stories placed “SHINOBINEGATA” which describes how the hero becomes a priest and the heroine becomes an empress.
