It is often claimed that Japanese students have difficulty in expressing their opinions in English. Reasons often given for this are unwillingness or lack of ability to express them. However, it is important to find students' perspectives on this issue. An investigation into literature on intercultural aspects of argumentation suggested that the way of expressing opinions varied between cultures and this had deep historical roots. Such views can shed light on the ways students express their opinions, but they should not be taken as absolutes. This research aimed to investigate students'perceptions on expressing opinions in English through their own reflective comments. The results revealed a range of attitudes to the different aspects of and particular difficulties in giving opinions.
