NW-SE-trending normal faults develop at the eastern margin of the Shitara district. They form a fault system and show a total stratigraphic separation(or throw)of about 300m. Most of the faults have a moderate dip of 60-70°and a throw of 40-50m or less; however, a low-angle(approx. 40°)normal fault indicates the largest throw of 150-200m, accommodating about 60% of the total throw of the fault system. This low-angle normal fault is possibly a listric one, and the other moderately dipping normal faults are interpreted as synthetic ones formed in association with the large listric normal fault. Based on previous stratigraphic and radiometric data as well as our new outcrop structural observations, we conclude that the faulting occurred under a sinistral transtensional condition between 19 Ma and 13 Ma. This transtension was probably related to such tectonic events as the clockwise rotation of the southwestern Japan arc and the collision of Izu-Ogasawara arc with the Japan arc.
