Using the qualitative research method and discourse analysis, the purpose of this study wasto identify the meaning of rivalry among former top athletes. According to the ResearchQuestion（RQ）,“What is the meaning of rivalry among former top athletes?”, data wascollected using one-on-one and one-on-two semi-structured interviews. Based on the results ofthe discourse analysis, the suggestions were as follows：（1）the relationship between therivals was narrated based on their dependence on each other；（2）the recognition of a rivalwas based not only on their interactions but also on one-side cognition；（3）psychologicaldistancing themselves brings about the improvement of self；and（4）the relationshipevolved from competing with each other to supporting each other. These were hypotheticalideas which recognize the psychological relationship among rivals.
