The term "autism" was first introduced to the world in 1943 when Leo Kanner published his paper, "Autistic Disturbances of Affective Contact." Later in Japan, in 1952, the first article on autism, Taeko Washimi's A Case of So-called Infantile Autism by Leo Kanner," came out in the field of child psychiatry. In Japan, the persons with autism who had severe intellectual disorders had long been categorized into "persons with mental deficiency", and neglected without any support. Therefore my research is based on the documents on "persons with mental deficiency." If we take communication ability as essential to live in the society, we should say that communication support is an essential care for persons with difficulties to survive. Up until now, there has not been much research accumulated, in the field of social welfare, concerning communication support for persons with autism, for their difficulties have been considered a personal problem, not a social one, and the support for them has largely depended on individual efforts. Behind these situations was the notion that the treatment of persons with autism should be argued not in the field of social welfare but in the field of medicine and/or special support education. However, to oppose that notion, we could cite Carol Gilligan s vision "that self and other will be treated as of equal worth,... that no one will be left alone or hurt." Here lies the significance of research on communication support for persons with autism in the field of social welfare. In this paper, I present a hypothesis that the acquisition of functional and spontaneous communication skills will bring a positive change in a person s quality of life. Then I would like to verify the effectiveness of communication training through the interviews with mothers of children with autism.
