This study is a part of a large-scale research project to improve Japanese employment examinations (first-stage written English tests in particular) and the present English teaching curriculum in universities. To this end, it is of great significance to compare the Japanese secondary school teacher employment examinations with Korean ones, as these countries have a fairly similar framework for both teacher training and recruitment, and teacher employment examinations play an important role in recruiting teachers. The teacher employment examinations in both countries are divided into two stages depending on open competition. The first- and second-stage tests have many similarities: for example, the first-stage tests are written tests and, roughly speaking, focus on the study of education and major subjects, while the second-stage tests attempt to assess candidates' personality and aptitude as a teacher as well as more practical teaching abilities. Nonetheless, there are some differences. One of the striking features is that the Korean first-stage test is strictly controlled in terms of content, point allocation, testing time, etc. The most significant difference in the first-stage test is that the Korean test is a criterion-referenced test, whereas the Japanese exam is a norm-referenced test. This paper focuses on Korean first-stage written English tests and aims at identifying what skills and knowledge are assessed by analyzing two types of tests (the national type and Seoul-Inchon type) conducted from 2002 to 2006. In conclusion, other findings of skills and knowledge identified are also discussed and ways to improve the employment examinations are proposed.
