One of the principal design problems in the face gears is to calculate the face width of the face gears. The maximum outside diameter of the face gear is limited by the point where the top land of the tooth narrows to a knife-edge, and the minimum inside diameter is limited by the point where the undercut exists in the tooth profile of the face gear. In designing the face gearsets, the following conditions should be fulfilled: (a) The crest of the face gear should not be sharpened. (b) The undercut should not exist in the tooth form of the face gear. (c) The involute interference should be avoided. (d) The contact ratio should be larger than 1.0. An analytical study on these subjects in the face gear is made by the author, and a pack of the synthetic diagrams available for the design and production of the face gearset is prepared. These synthetic diagrams are used for determining the maximum outside diameter, the minimum inside diameter and the face width of the face gear. The author shows some numerical examples with a view to facilitating the practical utilization of these diagrams, and the face gearsets are made by using the synthetic diagrams presented in this paper.
