The effects of the positive and negative stimulus number on choice reaction time (CRT) were independently examined. In Experiments 1 and 2, two sets of stimuli, some alphabet letters and katakana (sort of Japanese alphabet), were assigned to two motor responses, vocal and key-pressing response. The mean CRT as a function of the positive stimulus number was measured in each stimulus-response assignment, for six subjects. In all conditions, it was found that the mean CRT noticeably increased as the positive stimulus number changed from one to two, but was fixed at two and over (Tables 1, 2, 3, 4). In Experiment 3, the negative stimulus number was varied from one to four under the same conditions as in Experiments 1 and 2, for five subjects. It was confirmed that CRT was not influenced by the change in the negative stimulus number (Tables 5, 6).
