The experiments were performed to investigate some relationships between the amount of hemoglobin and the size of erythrocytes in goats during normal pregnancy. The goats examined in this experiments were three Saanen hybrids, and the blood samples were collected from them at intervals of 10 days (except several times) from the day of artificial insemination to 36th day after delivery. About Ice of blood samples were obtained from the jugular vein and used for the following tests : the number and diameter of erythrocytes, the hematocrit volume and the amount of hemo globin -- the mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration after Wintrobe ('32) were computed. The data measured and computed were examined statistifically whether difference was significant or not. The results obtained were as follows: (1) The hematocrit values in the early stage of pregnancy were found to be within the normal range of 38 per cent to 45 per cent, thereafter they fell gradually during late stage of pregnancy and reached to minimum values ranging from 28 per cent on the day just before delivery. This decrease may be due to the more increment of plasma volume than that of erythrocyte volume in the blood during middle and late stage of pregnancy. (2) The mean corpuscular volume in the early stage of pregnancy was found to be within the normal range of 34μ3 to 37μ3, but it fell thereafter and showed minimum values ranging from 22μ3 to 24μ3 in the 130th day of pregnancy, and then it increased slightly as approaching to delivery. (3) The mean corpuscular hemoglobin in the early stage of pregnancy was found to be within the normal range of 6.2rr to 7.12rr, but it fell during pregnancy and showed minimum values ranging 4.50rr to 4.85rr in the 130th day of pregnancy. After that, it increased progressively with approaching delivery. There was a individual variation in the time required to return to normal nonpregnant level and it varied from a few days to 4 weeks. (4) The mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration in the early stage of pregnancy was found to be within the normal range of 17 per cent 20 per cent, but it rose during middle and late of pregnancy reaching maximum ranging from 22 per cent 24 percent on the day just before delivery, and then it rose slightly in the puerperium. (5) The mean diameter of erythrocytes in the early stage of pregnancy was found to be within the normal range of 3.70μ to 3.78μ, but it fell thereafter and reached a minimum showing individual values ranging from 3.33μ to 3.8μ on the day just before delivery and then erythrocytes increased in size progressively after delivery.
