In this paper, the directions of the stages are mainly discussed, whichwere performed in Berlin and Wien between September 6th and October5th, 2008. Specifically, the following plays are analyzed and criticized: 8Shakespeare’s works, 3 various “Faust” works, 2 Brecht’s works and 2Kleist’s works, a drama of Camus and Genet, a stage version of Th.Mann and Ch. Wolf’s novel, and a modern play by Kater and Mouawad.Also 2 opera performances (“Tristan and Isolde” and “Rigoletto”) and 3concerts (ROS, SWO-SO and DSO) in Berlin are inserted as “intermezzi”in narration.In connection with the direction of Th. Mann’s “Zauberberg (MagicMountain)” and that of Brecht’s “Trommeln in der Nacht (Drums in theNight)”, several issues are raised as to the political process during andafter World War I in Germany, i.e., the war itself and the revolution andcounterrevolution right after the war, and the intellectuals’ statementson their attitude toward that political process, since both of them play anessential role in developing both of the works.
