Graham Greene stated that Brighton Rock was the best novel he had ever written. In this novel, he deals with the metaphysical question of good and evil in contrast with the moral world of right and wrong of our daily life. Greene formed Pinkie as a 17-year-old murderer who does not have a sense of sin. The anti-hero confronted God with an unprecedented scale of evil. Pinkie is provided with enormous pride, rejecting salvation to the very end of his life. In Brighton Rock, Greene asks whether God exists or not by Pinkie's revolt against God. Pinkie is always conscious of God, which means paradoxically that he is the nearest to God.
