The development of CD-ROMs, which are used as package media, seems to have beenspeeded up further by the release of a variety of software packages and the sale of personalcomputers with a CD-ROM drive for the last several years. On the other hand, the problemof sharing the use of a CD-ROM has already been raised because there is sufficient evidenceto suggest that networking is very likely to spread in computing. This paper is intended toexamine the present status, problems and possibilities of a proposed system in which theserver is part of the computer network and used to store or collect the information necessaryto aid in the control of a few of the CD-ROM drives.
