So (ch. cheng) which has long been used as a favorite musical instrument by our Japanese people, is a zither of thirteen strings imported from T'ang at Nara Period (A.D. 645-793). In its structure, however, much difference is to be seen between the ancient so and the present one. That will be proved with some of the broken parts of the old one preserved in the Shosoin Repository. With these materials as a reference it is now my task from the positive point of view to draw inferences from them about what the so of the Nara Period was like.
