This paper examines education for immigrant children in German-speaking Switzerland. Today there is increasing diversity in the school population. Although the education committees in Zurich and Basel-Stadt appreciate multicultural situation, they recognize the challenges posed by diversity. Education for German as second language (DaZ) is recognized as specialized area. The course in native language and culture (HSK) is governed by each language groups and authorized by the education committees. The local university of education provides in-service training for DaZ and HSK teachers.
