The relationship between Southern Baptists and evangelicals has been discussed first among Southern Baptist scholars and then between Southern Baptist and evangelical scholars during the last quarter century.　In the discussion, the “moderate” Southern Baptists emphasized the differences between them, whereas the “conservative” Southern Baptists stressed the similarities, with the evangelicals providing explanatory notes as the third party.　Although the first two viewpoints seem to contradict each other, on closer inspection it becomes clear that “both” the moderates and the conservatives were trying, albeit in different ways, to protect the Southern Baptist identity.　This paper will examine both of these views in an attempt to bring to light the strength of “denominationalism” among Southern Baptists in their relationships with the transdenominational evangelical movement.
