Various kinds of infrasonic waves have been recorded by the infrasonic network at Kariya since the beginning of its continuous operation in May 1984. While most of the signals are from identified sources such as volcanic eruptions and ocean waves, there are several kinds of strange signals for which the sources have not been identified yet. In the present paper, attention is focused on one kind of such strange signals which arrive occasionally from the north-west. The duration of the waves is normally less than 30 sec, with maximum aplitude of 2.2 μb as averaged over 15 such events recorded until April 1987. The average dominant period is 3.67 sec. These wave characteristics have been compared with those of the waves from the sources identified in the past, to estimate the possible source of the waves. As a result, it has been shown that no similar waves have been observed from natural phenomena so far, except for volcanic explosions. However, because there are no active volcanoes in the north-west direction, possible sources of the signals in question are inferred to be some man-made explosions which took place probably on the Sea of Japan. The exact location. and therefore the energy yield of the explosions could not be specified in the present study with the data obtained by a single tripartite network. However, the infrasonic observations have proved to be useful in monitoring the explosions, natural or artificial. if two or more arrays are operated with spacing of several hundred kilometers.
