Just 3 years before the Philadelphia International Exhibition of 1876 , the Vienna World Exhibition of 1873 was held, which was the first Exhibition attended by the Meiji Japanese Government. There was a geographic difference between the Vienna World Exhibition in Europe and the Philadelphia International Exhibition in the United States of America. However, attendance by the Meiji Japanese Government seemed to have the same consciousness of these Exhibitions abroad. So, it seemed there was much relationship between both Exhibitions. This report considers these relationships through the commissioners of both Exhibitions, the attendants who visited, the activities at both places, and the foundation of the first trading company, Kiriu-Kosho-Kuwaisha. It also examines Japanese buildings which were erected at both Exhibition sites, which were designed and built by same master carpenter, Ehe Matsuo. These factors show us there was much inheritance between both sites. It also mentions the sinking of the Neil in the sea of Izu, and the subsequent studies of advanced Western technology by Japanese students during and after the Vienna World Exhibition. These affairs are later related with the Philadelphia International Exhibition.
