This paper clarifies the primary factor causing intervention and non-intervention of “toyuu” in Japanese outer relative clauses from the perspective of “domain”. To make it short, if the subject of subordinate clause is the same as that of the main clause, or if the content of the subordinate clause presents feeling or sense or mental activity of the subject of the main clause, the content of the subordinate clause is“ within the domain” of the main clause subject. In such a case, “toyuu” tends to intervene.
