The genetic counseling service was provided from 1979 at Chuo Public Health Center at Naha City. We received 25 calls and 17 counselings were performed, of 17 clients, 12 were female and these were age under 35 years old. The counseling was done 4 cases before marriage, 6 cases befoer conception, 5 cases during pregnancy. As the medical problems, there were congenital malformation (3 cases), deafness (2 cases), ocular disease (2 cases), and other congenital anormalies (7 cases). Counseling on consanguinity were 3 cases. Moreover, 76 abnormal cases which found in the daily activity of public health nurse seems to be related to genetic problems. In order to performe the genetic counseling service to all person who have genetic problems, more counselor and paramedical staff are needed, and the service syptem of genetic counseling which include the hospital should be constituted as possible as early in Okinawa. Thereafter, an increasong amount of counseling may be done by speciality clinics with respect to their particular disease.
